Sadako was a young Japanese girl who fell sick after the WWII bombing of Hiroshima. Because of her religious belief, Sadako began to fold 1000 origami cranes for her unrealized hope of recovering. Many people around the world now have traditions of folding origami cranes for World Peace Day.
